Book Bash Letdown...

I was hoping I’d have better news, but I really shouldn’t be surprised. This is the way everything has gone for me throughout my author career, so why should this be any different? This may get depressing, you’ve been warned, and some of you, those who follow me on TikTok or BSKY, already know some of this.

Author's Life:

Going to give the highlights first, before the letdown, so if you’re looking for the “tea”, it’s in the third paragraph…

First, I want to give a HUGE shout out to Slade, who flew all the way from California to be my Emotional Support Friend. He hyped me up to everyone who approached the table, had a good conversation with a few, and handed out duckies to kids and bookmarks, stickers, and so on. He was a huge help for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed touring him around some of my favorite places in Buffalo before dropping him back off at the airport on Sunday Night. We were able to see Niagara Falls, the Buffalo Zoo, and the Science Museum. He also took me to the bookstore as our final stop before drop off. I enjoyed having a writer friend in town!

Second, I got to booth next to a couple friends from BSKY. We had a good time chatting and generally keeping it upbeat. Shoutout to S. Morgan Burbank, who writes sapphic dystopian fiction, Eliza Mares, who just released her first novella Cat & Mouse in January, and K. A. Bauer, who writes a little of everything LGBTQIA. They’re lovely humans and you should definitely check out their books.

my set up for the convention

my view of the convention

Lastly, the depressing bit. I only sold one book: The Stained Angel, which was in the first 2 hours of the doors opening. A lot of people took cards with information on them, bookmarks, and stickers, but just the one sale of a book and a pen. That’s it. To say I feel like a failure is an understatement. Now, I have 58 paperbacks in stock (not counting the scratch and dent copies, which is another twenty-five), and no plans to attend another convention/signing simply because I can’t handle it.

I’ve been in pain all week, my emotions are turbulent at best, and there were several times where I completely blue screened when asked about my books. Thankfully, Slade was right there to hype them for me, but I couldn’t do it by myself. Besides that, there are none closer to me, and finding other places to sell them spikes my anxiety more. In conclusion, it’s not feasible for me to go to another convention, but if you’ve wanted to order books from me. Now’s the time…

As for the rest of the week, I’ve been fighting body aches, emotions, and feelings of failure, which led to more writing… in another new story… (All the details on that in the Work Life chunk)

Editor Update:

Matt, my emotional support Australian and Manager, has the all clear from his doctors! He’ll still have appointments to check up on it every few months, but he’s cleared. Though, his endocrinologist is worried that one medication for the heart stuff may kick up his thyroid. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen and he’ll be good from here on out!

The work Life:

Writing:

Since the convention flop, I’ve been dealing with a lot of feelings, and as I so often do, I channeled them into writing.

Sunday night, I opened a fresh document to get the feelings out. I fully intended it to be a poem or blog about the convention circuit, and how hard it is for those like me, but I ended up starting a new book. This novel is completely out of the norm for me.

It’s a dual POV (Yes, Matt, I hadn’t told you that yet) “Slice of life” meets “billionaire romance” where a human indie Author and artist gets discovered by a preter CEO of a Publishing company after his daughter is the only one to buy her book at a convention. Now, don't read into it too much. I basically went "She'll start where I am and get a good ending out of it, though she'll be skeptical the whole d*Mn time."

It now has 22,900 words and it's all I’ve worked on this week… Okay, that’s a lie, I did edit a couple books, but I didn’t do any writing in them, 😅 and probably won’t pick up another book until this one is done.

What can I say? When my tw*twaffle of a muse wants a book separate from everything else, set nearly 100 years ahead of the current timeline and won't give it up I chase the dopamine she leaves me.

Total word count for the week: 22,900 words

April Word Count Goal: 45,000

April Word Count total:  50,582

Editing:

I have added ten chapters of edits for Fated Angel this week. I haven’t read any of A DANGEROUS GAME to Matt because I’m contemplating the big horror scene in the beginning of it… It takes up a chapter and a half, but I’m not sure it should stay. I’m thinking about chopping it short, adding a fade to black, and then dropping hints about what happened after while she’s at the hospital after.

Dee just got finished editing Angel Enraged, and there were only a few edits. 😱 She also had predictions for the last chunk that were correct. I’m not spoiling it though 😉 If you want to Beta Read for Angel Enraged, signups are open!

I also edited some of another book, which will be a standalone-ish. It’s got about 46k words and needs a bit of a rework, but I hadn’t added anything to it.
